Aventurine – vitality of spirit, clarity of mind, creative inspiration

Aventurine is a variety of quartz – a fine-grained siliceous variety (quartzite), or a mineral associated with feldspar (feldspar belongs to the group of rock-forming minerals) and quartz. Within it, sparkling fine inclusions of iron oxides and hydroxides (hematite, magnetite, ilmenite), flakes of mica (muscovite, etc.) and native copper can be seen. It resembles jade (aventurine is very often sold as jade), amazonite and green jasper. It is sometimes called “Indian jade”, which is incorrect, although the bright green varieties can be almost as valuable as jade.

The hardness of aventurine is 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale.

It is found mainly in green, but specimens also occur in other colours – orange, cream, dark red, peach, brown, pink, reddish-brown, yellow-brown and dark blue. Red varieties with golden reflections from mica and hematite tones can also occur.

Deposits: Brazil, India, Russia – the Urals and Siberia, the USA, Australia, Germany, Japan and Tanzania.

In antiquity, Greek warriors sewed it into their clothing to maintain optimism. It was also revered as a source of strength and courage. People believed it made its owner cheerful, witty and inquisitive and helped distinguish good friends from bad ones. In ancient times, this stone was believed to heal allergies and heart ailments. Eastern peoples believed that aventurine improved eyesight. The very name of the stone suggests an association with love. The ancients believed that whoever possessed this stone would experience true love and that it would protect the two lovers from misfortune.

Even today, aventurine is believed to calm anxiety and fear. It helps build a positive attitude and independence. It is associated with Earth energy and is therefore said to help bring balance and calm. It is believed to balance and harmonise masculine and feminine energy.

As a protective amulet in the form of jewellery, aventurine is believed to remove excessive anxiety and fear while encouraging a positive attitude. It is also considered a good talisman for people involved in gambling.

Because aventurine is believed to enhance creative visualisation, it is considered an excellent aid for writers, artists, musicians and everyone engaged in creative work.

If you use it together with malachite, it may help remove mental and emotional blocks. Combined with rose quartz, it is believed to strengthen empathic abilities.

Aventurine – Green: Enhances self-confidence; keeps the sixth and seventh chakras open; creates harmony and balance. Aventurine – Blue – Teaches, heals and regenerates; brings forth the wounded inner child. It heals emotions through the mind, the universal Divine Mind and the Goddess within us, providing access to the Light Body, the mental-body grid and the planetary grid.
