History and symbolism
History and legends: Carnelian has been known since antiquity. Its name is said to derive from the Latin “carneolus” – cherry, or from the Latin word carnis (flesh or flesh-colored). It has been revered since ancient times. People knew that placing it in sunlight would make its color lighter, whereas simply heating it would not have the same effect.
Ever since it has been known to humankind, it has been believed to bring happiness and good luck to its owner. A number of older cultures used it for healing, magic and practical purposes.
During the Middle Ages, it was valued as a stone believed to protect against various natural disasters – thunderstorms, floods and earthquakes.
The ancient Egyptians called Carnelian the “blood of Isis.” The stone was very popular among worshippers of Isis. They wore it as a protective talisman. Interestingly, during embalming, Carnelian was placed on the throat of the deceased. It was believed to act as a talisman even while the soul traveled through the Underworld. The Egyptians made many magical objects from Carnelian. Perhaps the most popular were the “Buckle of Isis” and the Ab amulet (an amulet protecting the heart). One of the chapters of the “Book of the Dead” is dedicated to the Carnelian buckle of this goddess.
Dark-red Carnelian was held in exceptionally high regard by Arabs and Turks and was considered very powerful. Muslims called it the “stone of Mecca” and believed it could fulfill all kinds of wishes and therefore bring supreme happiness. It is believed that Muhammad wore a Carnelian ring as an amulet for a blessed life after death.
In some Eastern cultures, Carnelian is believed to protect against black magic, guard against disease and plague, and repel envious people.
A number of ancient cultures believed Carnelian could change a person’s bad character. It was also believed to protect against hemorrhage, nosebleeds, heavy menstruation and bleeding wounds. In addition to stopping bleeding, ancient healers used Carnelian powder against diarrhea. They recommended it for jaundice. It was attached to the abdomen of women to ease and assist childbirth.
If you dream of Carnelian, it means that someone has directed bad thoughts toward you; be prepared for possible trouble.,

Cleansing Carnelian
Carnelian is believed to have the unique property of cleansing other stones in your collection. If placed in a pouch with smaller crystals, it is said to act as a battery and filter for them.
In combination with selenite (described as “pure light” in crystal form), its energy is considered especially clear and elevated. This is a wonderful choice for cleansing the energy of a home.
When worn, direct contact with the skin is considered preferable. Unlike some other minerals, it is said to rarely cause allergic reactions or other unwanted problems.
It is a good idea to rinse it under running water from time to time.
A small tip: Avoid wearing Carnelian together with strongly calming stones such as blue lace agate or amethyst if your goal is activity. Their energies are considered opposite – one “wakes you up,” while the other “puts you to sleep,” which may lead to a feeling of confusion.
